The upcoming release of Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) is highly anticipated not only for the system enhancements it will likely get, but also for its new default theme. The visual refresh is a long time coming, so I expect the Ubuntu artwork team is cooking something good for all of us.
The October release date of Ubuntu 8.10 is fast approaching, yet until now, we don’t know exactly what the finished product will look like. I don’t want to make any guesses, instead, I decided to collect 10 beautiful existing GTK 2.x themes that I think can be further improved or altered and be used as the default desktop theme for Intrepid Ibex. Enjoy!

#4 Laza really looks cool, but I think #1 Glow Ibex is appropriate for the default theme.
ReplyDeleteI also love Laza :D it's simple and elegant.. and it's black.. second choice is Ibex.. heehee :)
ReplyDeleteDownload links would be a nice addition...
ReplyDelete+1 for dl links!
ReplyDeleteGlow Ibex is looking the most promising for a default theme, but I still think it needs to be a little less darker. It's so dark that causes serious usability issues, it's hard to read and distinct between toolbars and such. The shape and size of buttons and drop-down lists are great on the other hand.
ReplyDeleteI think those are really ugly. I'd rather have some predominantly light shades of gray and blue and funky and dark colors like orange and brown only for icons. I only use dark and red themes when I'm out at night with a telesecope.
ReplyDeleteWhat is that color? It's hurting my eyes! I can't tell if it's brown or red. Oh my god, why would I want to look at it. It's giving me a migrane. I'm glad I read The Truth about Linux.
ReplyDeleteThere are some nice themes, just too bad they're all dark or high-contrast themes. It's an option, but there's more than that.
ReplyDeletehehe... another hater, i see.. oh well...
ReplyDeletei like the themes though. it's just that i use console more often.. =P
i'll give it a try one of these days.
*penguin rocks*
nice themes, number 10 is cool.

Ugh, what is this obession with dark themes. It looks so childish.
ReplyDeleteWhy cant we stick with lighter themes. Theres nothing wrong with the current theme. Tweak it a little, and a bit of candy and make it more consistent through out the apps and interface.
All these dark themes look horible. The only half decent one is Dust and you didnt even list it.

I love Ice Orange!
ReplyDeletebut which type of gnome panel it uses on screenshot?
I want it!
Any chance of one that is less... well... emo? Cause us adults are unlikely to use themes that looks like a depressed fourteen year old made them. They may be stylistically clean and all that, but they are also pretty damn dark and depressing. It is pretty annoying when the first thing you have to do to get a usable computer is edit the theme. For me it isn't a dealbreaker, but I imagine to some people it is.
ReplyDeleteSo... is ubuntu looking for new users mainly amongst the emo 'tweens now?
Really nice themes
ReplyDeletegreat list
nice collection :) I like a few of those themes.
ReplyDeletelove the dark themes, the only problem is firefox looks like shit in them, so what do you use most? i'll stick to my white - blueish theme for now
ReplyDeletecan we get some similar themes for hardy heron?
ReplyDeleteElegant Brit looks great! By the way, on your browser poll you forgot Midori! Its a great little browser.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites:

Azel
Orange-door-hinge
Absolutely loving #9. That is some designer material.
ReplyDeleteAwesome++ for Elfen Leid in the Azel screenshot.
ReplyDeleteawesome
ReplyDeletewill this work on Ubuntu 8.04??
ReplyDeletei didnt like these either. too dark.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the wallpaper for the theme 'Chocolate'? - love the destroyed picture of London.
ReplyDeleteThese suck
ReplyDeletelove the wood floor wallpaper in Passion. where would I find that?
ReplyDeleteWow, these are beautiful themes. Makes me want to switch to Ubuntu for my next computer.
ReplyDeleteI've found the them changing when upgrading to be a pain. You make a mental model of which icons are for what, and then an upgrade changes the theme to some new default (since everyone expects a new coat of paint), and you have to go back and reset your old theme or tweak it for an hour. When upgrading, they should just pop-up a message asking if you want to keep your current theme or reset to default.
ReplyDeleteI’m a fan of good themes and love to customize my desktop, I started searching for the best Ubuntu / Gnome Themes. I downloaded loads of them, bookmarked and saved the pages for further use. You can access what I have collected on my blog Ubuntu Dan. I hope this was helpful!
